This Victorian glass basket is made from opaque, custard colored glass. The basket has a round, rose bowl type form, with a looped applied handle in amber glass, an amber leaf trail, & a pink & white flower. The piece is indicative of the Victorian aesthetic movement, which often featured natural motifs and ornate applied decorations.
The basket is made of Vaseline glass, which is a type of transparent, yellow-green glassware containing uranium dioxide, giving it a distinctive glow under ultraviolet (black) light, named for its resemblance to petroleum jelly; it was popular in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, is safe for display, and is collected for its unique color and fluorescence.
